Collioure Half Day Trips

Port Vendres (5min drive). A working fishing port with a Saturday market, La Criée fish market & eatery , Mackintosh art trail, also explore the Cap Béar Lighthouse & old fortifications.

Banyuls sur Mer (15min). Famous for its fortified dessert wine. Tour the winery, take the train ride, see how the wine is made and visit the Aquarium. Perhaps return to Collioure via Tour Madeloc, an ancient signal tower, behind Banyuls and with spectacular views of the coast.

Ceret (40min) A charming historic mountain village with a Saturday market, the Cherry festival in May and its famed Museum of Modern Art with works by Chagall, Matisse and Picasso. Then, 15min + by car, visit Gorge Du Fou - a breathtaking 1770m footbridge walk along Europe’s narrowest canyon.

Thuir (40min) Visit the Byrrh Caves & sample the famed aperitifs. Then drive onto Castelnou, a walled, stone village with a 10th century chateau. If time permits, visit the geological formation called Les Orgues at Ille sur-Tet.

Fort Bellegarde (40min) View the fortress remains built on Le Perthus pass in the Albéres mountains that carried Hannibal, his army and his elephants, on his legendary march to Rome in 3 rd century BC.
